REGULARS at a club in Swinton have dug deep in their pockets to raise £1,000 for a cancer charity.

Drinkers at the LNER Athletic Club on Rowms Lane got together for a special charity night last week to raise the money for Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield.

Country music artist Carolann B played for the crowds, and there was also a raffle with more than 30 prizes up for grabs.

Former Darts World Champion Dennis Priestley was also on hand to receive the cheque on behalf of Weston Park Hospital.

Club secretary Sandra Rogerson said: “We all had a great night and were amazed when we realised we had collected £1,000.

“With the financial situation like it is, we never expected to raise that much.

“It just goes to show that people are still generous to charity even in times of need.”

She added: “We lost a few of our regulars to cancer recently so we thought it was only right to help other sufferers.

“I want to say a big thankyou to everyone who raised the money, in particular Ladbrokes at Mexborough who gave us £200.

“Dennis Priestley sometimes plays darts in our club and he was happy to come down to receive the cheque on behalf of the charity, so a big thank you to him as well.”
