BEEF and Ale is South Yorkshire’s best-loved pie filling, according to a new poll.
The traditional dish has beaten a host of other pastry delights in the Great British Pie Poll.
Runner-up in the list was the great British steak and kidney pie, followed by chicken and mushroom.
Chef & Brewer, commissioned the study of 3,000 pie lovers.
Paul Farr, of the pub restaurant chain, said: “A good, hearty pie is quintessentially British and a really comforting winter dish.
“Whether you’re in your local pub, at home or standing on the football terraces a wholesome pie will sustain you throughout a cold winter’s day.”
In fourth place was cheese and onion followed by chicken and bacon pie.
Family favourite lamb and mint came in sixth place just ahead of fish pie and chicken and sweetcorn.
Completing the top ten pies of all time was corned beef and game.
Paul added: “All the pies in the top ten list are fairly traditional, which is great to see.
“Although pastry alone isn’t exactly healthy, the fillings of many pies do contain a good mix of meat and veg which form part of a balanced and nutritious diet.
“Although not quite making it into the top 10, but growing in popularity is game pie containing such meat as venison.”
