Staff at a Sheffield dance school have two reasons to celebrate – after expansion was coupled with ‘university’ status.

Noodle Performance Arts, which runs classes for children across the city, is expanding into Rotherham, at the same time as it becomes a learning destination for Sheffield Children’s University.

Sheffield Children’s University is a city-wide scheme which aims to encourage children and young people to take part in out-of-school activities to boost their learning and development and now children taking Noodle’s performing arts and dance classes can earn credits to achieve special awards.

Nikki Johnson, Noodle managing director, said: “Our classes not only teach new skills but they build children’s confidence and self-esteem and we are delighted they will now also count towards children’s university awards.”

The university status comes as Noodle expands into Rotherham, with classes at Whiston Parish Hall and The Corner Space in Parkgate.

And to mark the new venues, Noodle is is offering free trial classes on Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18.

Classes include ballet and performing arts for youngsters aged three to six, as well as sessions specially designed for toddlers from the moment they can walk.

Mum-of-three Nikki, from Beighton, started Noodle in September 2011 to provide children and their parents with a more relaxed and affordable alternative to traditional stage and dance schools.

The informal approach proved to be a success and in 2012 Noodle won the Netmums award for best pre-school classes in Sheffield.

Nikki said: “I started Noodle because I realised there were lots of young people who wanted a chance to dance, act and sing without having to pass exams or wear a strict uniform.

It is amazing to see quiet, shy children transform into confident young people as a result of our classes.

“It is amazing to see quiet, shy children transform into confident young people as a result of our classes.

“Youngsters have the opportunity to perform for an audience at our annual shows, as well as other events, but the focus is always on having fun.

“The response to our classes in Sheffield has been amazing and I had many people approaching me asking us if we had any venues in Rotherham.

“We are delighted to be able to respond to this demand and expand into the town with two exciting new venues.”

The new Rotherham classes include four sessions at The Corner Space, a fully equipped dance studio On Greasbrough Road, Parkgate.

Toddlers can get their first taste of ballet at ballet tots on Fridays, from 9.30am to 10am, while, at 9.30am on Saturdays, there are half-hour Noodle Tots classes where under-threes can enjoy music, singing, movement and drama.

A performing arts class for children aged three to six will run on Saturdays, from 10am to 11am, followed by a ballet class for the same age group from 11am to 11.45am.

There is also a further ballet tots class from 10.45am to 11.15am on Fridays at Whiston Parish Hall, Well Lane, Whiston. The ballet tots sessions teach basic ballet movements using music, singing and fun activities.

Places on the free trial classes can be booked online at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/noodleperformancearts.

Noodle is also planning to offer an extra ballet tots class at Beighton Lifestyle Centre on Mondays, from 11am to 11.30am – its two existing sessions at the venue on High Street, Beighton, have been such a hit with little ones since they were launched in November 2012 that a new session is being added to cope with demand.
