Stars from hit film Brassed Off and former miners were among guests at an event in Parliament to mark the 20th anniversary of Grimethorpe Colliery’s closure.

Michael Dugher, Labour MP for Barnsley East, hosted the gathering which he said offered ‘an opportunity to pay tribute to Grimethorpe’s proud industrial history and the incredible resilience of the community’.

Brassed Off actors Stephen Tompkinson, Jim Carter and Philip Jackson were present, and there were speeches from villagers and people with connections to the mine, including historian Mel Dyke.

Mr Dugher said: “Our industrial heritage in South Yorkshire is incredibly important. This was a great event and a fantastic opportunity to pay tribute to the incredible resilience of a community.

“All of those who spoke were brilliant and the variety of people who were at the event is a testament to Grimethorpe.”
