Comic book characters sprang from the page into real life as hundreds gathered at the Yorkshire Cosplay Convention in Doncaster this afternoon.

More than 1,500 people - mostly young and many dressed in costume - attended the event at The Dome.

The Forum area of the Bawtry Road leisure centre, where a stage was set up for performers, was packed and other rooms were filled with trade stands and activity areas.

Batman villains, Ghostbusters, Spiderman and Jedi were just some of the spectacular costumed character strolling round the convention

The event was organised by 24-year-old graphic designer Kathrine Furness, from Conisbrough, who has put on smaller conventions in the past.

She said: “I am overwhelmed by the turnout, I just decided to advertise it wider and this has happened. I’ve been doing this for years but this is the biggest one yet.

“Most of the people here just like getting dressed up as their favourite comic characters. They can meet together with like-minded people.

“This started as a hobby for me when I was at school and loved Japaneses comics and it has just got bigger. The last time we just had a couple of rooms but this is taking up all of The Forum and I think we’ll need something bigger for the next one.”

Many of the girls are fans of the Japanese comic characters and wear colouful wigs as part of their costumes.

Almost 50 traders were doing a roaring trade in Manga toys, hairpieces, costumes, collectables, comic books, hand made jewellery.

The convention was opened by Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones.
