FAWLTY Towers star Prunella Scales, one of Britain's best loved actresses, stars in the monologue-based Gertrudes Secrets, at Doncaster's Civic Theatre.
We are offering Times readers a chance to win a pair of tickets for the performance in this week's competition.

Now in its third year, Gertrude's Secret has been performed to thousands of people at numerous major theatres around the country, including The Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House, The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford, The Minerva Theatre, Chichester, The Everyman, Cheltenham, The Durham Gala, The Darlington Civic and The Oxford Playhouse.

Always featuring top acting talent, casts have included Angela Griffin (Waterloo Road), Lisa Faulkner (Spooks, New Street Law), Angela Lonsdale (Coronation Street), Natalie Cassidy and James Alexandrou (EastEnders), Helen Fraser (The Royle Family, Bad Girls) and one of Britain's best-loved actresses, Prunella Scales.

The show is a series of fast-moving 10-minute monologues performed by different superb actors. Each monologue is a separate story, giving an insight into the life of the character. Some are pure comedy, some are dark, poignant and moving, and some contain an unexpected twist. Always entertaining and often thought-provoking, the show is consistently popular with audiences.

The selection of monologues varies slightly for each performance but could include prim Maureen from the bought-ledger department, who tells us about her new relationship and her hopes for the future. It slowly dawns on us that things are unlikely to turn out well. Another, Alexander, may be a football hooligan – or something completely different...

Pensioner Eric complains about his purchases: a Red Leicester cheese that's really orange, a tie that's too tight... the words get audiences laughing, but hidden inside is the truth of Eric's lonely life.

Then there's elderly Gertrude, waiting for her daughter to call on her birthday. Her daughter will get much more than she bargained for. Meanwhile, 10-year-old Emily is stranded alone in a seedy Amsterdam hotel room, but may be facing a far worse fate.

Overall, it is a beautiful, light-hearted and at times terrifying portrait of our diverse society.

Tickets are available from the Doncaster Civic Theatre (01302 342349, www.doncastercivic.co.uk). Tickets are 18, 16 concessions and 8 students.
