WHEATLEY Hills dropped from second to fourth in North East One after suffering an 18-7 defeat at Durham City.

The Doncaster side struggled to come to terms with the wet conditions, especially in the second half, and can have no complaints about the result.

They fell behind after 25 minutes when being penalised for a high tackle, but hit back to take a 7-3 interval lead.

Scrum-half Ian Barker took a quick tap penalty and looked a likely scorer until being held just short. However. he managed to pop the ball out of the tackle to the supporting Dan Undy who scored at the side of the posts near enough for Guy Townsley to convert.

The home side regained the lead three minutes after the break after catching the defence napping.

Townsley failed with a long-range penalty during a rare Wheatley excursion into the Durham half after the break.

The home side dominated the second half exchanges and added to their lead with second try on 70 minutes,

Doncaster Phoenix had to settle for a 15-15 draw in their Yorkshire League Division Two clash against Bradford Salem at Castle Park.

The relegated visitors made light work of the wet conditions to claim a brace of early unconverted tries to lead 10-0.

Phoenix grabbed a 12-10 interval lead with a try by full-back Owen Denovan, who had joined the line to make an extra man and score in the corner.

Millar extended Phoenix’s lead to 15-10 when landing a penalty from the half-way line. The West Yorkshire side finished strongly and scored a third unconverted try.

Wheatley Hills seconds suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Wath.
