ORGANISERS of the Isle of Axholme Half Marathon are encouraged with the take up so far for their event which takes place on Sunday.

Around 300 runners from across the region will be running alongside the many locals who have signed up.

Julian Moorhouse, from organisers Metres to Miles, said: “This is the third running of the event.

“It’s a lovely course, taking in the Isle and we’ve had some wonderful feedback from people the last couple of years.

“We hope the runners and supporters will enjoy the event this year.”

The race starts at 10am in the Market Place in Epworth and takes a short lap of the village along Rectory Street, Greengate and Hollingsworth Lane, before heading out and taking in the villages of Owston Ferry, Kelfield, alongside the River Trent to West Butterwick, Beltoft and then back into Epworth to finish.

Run on mainly flat rural roads this event is the perfect chance for runners of all abilities to achieve a goal of completing a half marathon.

Julian added: “The national events calendar is now getting quite congested and we struggled a little this year getting a date for the event. But we didn’t want to lose the local event, particularly in Olympic year! We are a week after the Great North Run, but we’ve had a lot of people say they intend to ‘double-up’ as long as their legs aren’t too sore.”

The support for the runners out on the course has been fed back to organisers in previous years and Julian hopes again that the locals will cheer them passing their street.

“It was fantastic to see so many people out in the various villages, even the first year when the event was run in torrential rain, we had people out shouting and encouraging the runners.”
