Ten is the best for Welfare FC
PETER BROOKS HONDA MEXBOROUGH AND DISTRICT SUNDAY LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION WELFARE FC grabbed their first win of the season at the 10th time of asking to dramatically boost their chances of avoiding the drop.
The Denaby side saw off fellow relegation stugglers The Dearne 4-3 in a dramatic contest. Jay Astphall gave Welfare a lead against the run of play which sparked them to life and the single goal margin should have been wider at the break.
Mark Newton then doubled the advantage before Dearne pulled one back. Newton struck again to re-establish the cushion but Dearne fought back, drawing level with two goals including a 25 yard screamer.
But Andy Billups netted his first for Welfare, and it proved an important maiden strike as it sealed the win and took his side off the bottom.
Westville came from two goals down to beat local rivals Queens United 5-2 and maintain their outside hopes for the title.
Queens took an early lead and could have had more in what was a poor first half for Westville, something they were made clear of in a stern half time talk.
But they were again caught cold as Queens doubled their advantage just after the break.
Westville responded well however with three goals in nine minutes.
Nicky Harper hit a brace while Luke Sykes struck from the spot after being brought down himself.
Sean Mitchell added a fourth as Westville took control while substitute James Hunter rounded off the contest in superb fashion as he galloped clear and lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box.
DIVISION ONE
FOX'S promotion hopes took a major hit as they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation threatened Mexborough Sportsman.
Lee Hallam put Fox in front in the first minute but Sportsman hit back then took the lead just after the break. With 10 minutes to go Lee Jenkins grabbed an equaliser.
Fox now sit a point behind second placed Station 2007 but have played three games more.
Leaders Thurnscoe Coronation now have one foot back in the Premier Division after seeing off Station 3-1 to open up a nine point lead.
DIVISION TWO
BARNBURGH Coach and Horses moved back to the top of the table after a 5-3 win over Conisbrough WMC as title rivals George and Dragon were in cup action. Glyn Gielhardt, David Siddons and Jamie Holland found the net for Conisbrough, the latter of which was a superb effort.
Promotion hopefuls Ingsfield Lane were held to a goalless draw by The Castle.
The meeting of two promotion chasers ended in stalemate as Team Conyers and Montagu Arms battled to a 2-2 draw while The Gate took a massive step towards survival with a 4-1 win over Wath Corner Pocket who scored through Martin Wilson.
DIVISION THREE
BOTTOM side Conisbrough Station made it two successive draws as they held Albert Road to a 3-3 draw thanks to David Harrison's hat-trick.
Station had been 3-1 in front but Albert fought back, their goals coming from through a Mick Roe brace and one from Lee Smith.
Saracens Head could not prevent Cross Keys continuing their promotion push as they fell to a 2-0 defeat, despite putting in one of their best performances of the season.
Mi Casa kept up with Keys' pace with a 4-3 win over Telstar.
DIARY DATES MEXBOROUGH CHALLENGE CUP
GROVES Social swept into the semi finals of the Diary Dates cup with a 9-1 win over Mexborough Main Street.
Stephen Ellor hit five while Paul Hemingway, Mark Pratt, Ian Smith and Robert Oxer were also on target for Groves. Adam Middleton responded for the young Division Three side who were far from disgraced in defeat.
Swinton WMC join Groves in the final four after a 2-0 win over Goldthorpe Comrades. Danny Whaley was upended in the box allowing Andy Whitehead to score from the spot. John Billups headed home the second to round off a man of the match performance.

GEORGE and Dragon smashed their way into the semi final with an 11-0 win over Boy and Barrel.
Matty Drewett hit a hat-trick while Ben Pankovics and George Cooke hit braces. Scott McClure, Berry Kurde, Lee Jones and Joseph Linstead rounded off the spree for the news kids on the block.
