Wheatley see off Northern rivals to hold on to top spot
WHEATLEY Hills retained top spot in North East One after beating previously unbeaten Northern 36-25,
The home side took an early lead with an unconverted try by full-back James Bird who had joined the line.
The Doncaster side hit back with a 20th minute penalty by Johnny Woodcock, who also tagged on the touchline conversion to a close-range try by No 8 Gaz Burns shortly after.
Centre Kris Borthwick cashed in on some sloppy tackling to cross for a converted try on 28 minutes to earn his side a 12-10 lead.
Woodcock restored Wheatley’s lead on the half-hour with a second penalty and he also tagged on the extras after centre Ryan Guest capitalised on an overlap to dummy his way over. Northern cut their interval deficit to five points with a second penalty.
The impressive Bird went over again early in the second half and the resulting conn version left Wheatley trailing 22-20.
Woodcock edged the visitors into a one-point lead two minutes later - a lead he extended with a 52nd minute penalty. Chris Cusack then went over in the corner following another good handling move.
Replacement Ryan Crasswell rounded off the scoring after capitalising on an overlap after Northern had got back to within six points.
Doncaster Phoenix recorded a third successive Yorkshire League Division Two win, beating lowly Moortown 39-22 at Castle Park.
The Leeds club took an early 3-0 lead but Phoenix, who also squandered several other chances, hit back to take a 14-6 interval lead.
Flanker Adi Sheehan crossed from close range for a try goaled by Jono Storey to make it 7-3 with player-coach Ryan Peacey finishing well to score in the corner.
Moortown closed the gap to 14-12 with a brace of penalties after the break, but further tries by centre Olly Clark and Peacey, the first being converted by Richard Greaves, stretched Phoenix’s lead to 26-12. Moortown hit back with a converted try make it 26-19.
Both sides then exchanged penalties before Storey dropped a goal and the best try of the game by winger Tom Cooper sealed Moortown’s fate.
