HIGH-flying Yorkshire League side Doncaster Phoenix paid the price for leaving out 10 regulars as they slumped 30-7 against fast improving Division One side Dinnington in their Yorkshire Shield second round match at Dinnington.

Turning round 17-0 down, Phoenix rallied with a try by No 8 forward Nick Byrne, converted by full-back Craig Deakin.

But that was as good as it got as the home side booted over a couple of penalties prior to breaking through for their fourth try of the game late on.

“It shows that we will have to raise our game if we are promoted this season,” said spokesman Bill Farley.

Thornensians, who play in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy junior competition, were left without a match when their second round clash at Aireborough was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch which then froze over.

Doncaster Phoenix seconds, who fielded several teenagers, crashed to a 54-0 merit table defeat at Dinnington.
