DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Nott’ a great day for the strugglers
THE Knights suffered brutal revenge for their British and Irish Cup heroics as they were thrashed 52-7 by on-song Nottingham at Meadow Lane.
Clive Griffiths will take full time control of the side on Monday and is again set to slam home the message of keeping discipline after watching Doncaster lead to their own downfall.
The Knights conceded four penalties when reduced to 14 men, ensuring a hefty defeat.
And most worrying for Griffiths was the poor performance in general which failed to maintain the progress made in the narrow defeat to Bedford.
Last month’s 27-13 win at Meadow Lane never looked like being repeated, albeit against a much stronger Nottingham outfit.
After a positive start, the Knights found themselves behind when Tyson Lewis failed to smother a kick and Tim Streather dribbled and collected to score, James Arlidge converting.
The hosts doubled their lead midway through the half when Joe Duffey broke a tackle from five metres to go over for another converted try.
And they were quickly out of sight with Rhys Crane diving over in the corner.
The lead was stretched to 28-0 before the break when Montague dotted down, earning the bonus point.
The Knights enjoyed their best spell after the break and opened their account when Jethro Rawling powered over from close range, Jamie Lennard converting.
But their hopes of a comeback were hit when Adam Kettle was sin-binned for a foul on Montague.
The pressure from Nottingham returned and David Jackson grabbed their fifth try on 63 minutes.
Andy Brown sat out the last ten minutes after a yellow card and Nottingham made the numbers advantage count with Streather adding another try and Andrew Savage also getting in on the act with a pair of his own.
Victory would have seen the Knights jump up to tenth in the Championship.
Instead, they head into Friday night’s crunch game with fellow strugglers Jersey at the bottom of the table, level on points with the Channel Islanders.
