Doncaster Knights look for cutting edge

DONCASTER Knights’ boss Brett Davey will be working on adding more of a a cutting edge to the team’s attacking play in training this week ahead of Saturday’s trip to London Scottish.

The Castle Park club have failed to score a try in their last two outings against fancied Bristol and bookies’ favourites Newcastle Falcons.

Davey admitted that his charges never looked like getting over the line in Friday’s 37-3 defeat at relegated Newcastle Falcons - though they made the home side work harder for their third successive five-point win than the scoreline would suggest.

“It was only 23-3 with something like 15 minutes to go and they didn’t score their fourth try until the last minute,” said the Welshman.

“I’m pleased with how things are going defensively; we tackled well against Bristol and we did the same against Newcastle, but we never looked like we were going to score a try.

“The forwards worked hard but Newcastle had a very strong pack in the Premiership last season and that is even more the case in the Championship.

“With their power and size they will walk away with the title this season. The forwards worked hard again and we’ve got to try and capitalise on the back of it. We need to get our attack going which hasn’t really functioned yet.”

Knights are second bottom in the Championship with just one point from three games

But said Davey yesterday: “I’m not taking much notice of the league at this stage because some teams have had easier starts than others.

“We’ve probably had the toughest start of anyone but we’ve got a bunch of games coming up where we should be in the mix, starting with the Scottish game.

“Having said that, we know it is going to be tough to win down there, even though we came away with a win last season.”
