DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Head coach Glen Kenworthy

.

.

VETERAN Doncaster Knights’ forward Glen Kenworthy has decided to hang his boots and retire from playing.

But the popular New Zealander, who has combined the role of forwards’ coach this season with that of playing in the second row, will be staying on at Castle Park as the club’s new head coach.

The 38-year-old second-row boasts considerable experience of Championship rugby with over 300 appearances in the league, on top of Premiership action with Knights’ closest rivals Rotherham Titans since his move from Super 14 outfit, Otago Highlanders.

Kenworthy made 150 Championship starts in his seven-year spell at the club, though he eased back from playing this season to fill the void as forwards coach.

Director of rugby, Brett Davey, says he has been impressed with the giant lock forward, believing his coaching prowess will spearhead an immediate improvement in Doncaster’s set-piece over the coming years.

“I’m really pleased to keep Kendo at the club,” said the Welshman. “He has been a tremendous player and has Doncaster at his heart; it will be a big year for him solely as a coach.

“He has such a powerful identity here, and it’s that identity we need to keep. In certain ways we need to go back to basics and discover some consistency which Glen is keen to do.

“We both believe in playing attractive rugby, but we are planning on bringing back some of the traditional Doncaster style of play as wins are the foremost importance. It is about making Castle Park a fortress and a solid pack will help that.

“I don’t see him as an assistant; he will be taking control of the rugby sessions and this year will define him as a coach. It is a tough ask being thrown in, but he has already proved he has the potential and will make a great head coach.”
