DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Getting better despite 27-22 defeat

DONCASTER Knights’ head coach Glen Kenworthy admits that the Castle Park side should have done better in their opening two Championship games, both of which have ended in defeat.

“The performance in the (27-22) defeat at Plymouth was probably the worst performance since I’ve been here and we should have beaten a depleted Bristol side at home on Friday,” said the New Zealander.

“It was a massive improvement on Friday; it was like two different teams. Had we played like we did against Bristol we probably would have beaten Plymouth by 30 points.

“In terms of effort, particularly defensively, we couldn’t have asked for anything more of the boys. They didn’t give up.

“We only conceded two tries and one of those was a fluke try from a bad bounce.

“We didn’t create a lot of scoring chances but we didn’t have a lot of possession in the right areas.

“We went close near the end and had we scored it might have been good enough to get us the win because we were only six points behind at the time.

“There were some stand-out performances from such as Brian McGovern. He played a full game and started at tight head and then switched to loose head. He’s a good player and we are happy to have him.”

The Knights’ squad will watch a DVD of the Bristol game today before beginning preparations for Saturday’s testing game at Newcastle.
