DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Clive Griffiths urges Knights to build on Jersey win

NEW Doncaster Knights’ boss Clive Griffiths is wanting his charges to build on the 22-17 Championship win over fellow strugglers Jersey at Castle Park.

“We’ve got back-to-back British & Irish Cup games against Llandovery before we play our next League game at Bristol just before Christmas and I want us to get some momentum before we go down there,” said the Welshman.

Reflecting on only the club’s second win of the season against the Channel Islanders, who were making their first ever visit to Castle Park, Griffiths told The Star: “It was all about winning the game and climbing off the foot of the table. I was very pleased with how we picked ourselves up from a 45-point defeat at Nottingham five days earlier. The only disappointment was that we didn’t pick up a winning bonus point and they picked up a losing point when we let them in for a soft try near the end.

“They should never have got that close because we led 22-3 after scoring two tries just after half-time.

“But we had a man sin-binned, and just as happened at Nottingham, we conceded a try when down to 14 men and it’s something we’ve got to look at.

“We got off to a great start with a try by Tyson Lewis and we played some good rugby.

“We played with a lot of width, which is what I’m wanting us to do - though there are times when you have to keep it tight - and we should have had a couple more first half tries.”

The game marked the debut of Canadian international Connor Braid, who produced a man-of-the-match display playing at fly-half.

Griffiths worked with the Canadian team before their game against the Maori All Blacks at Oxford late last month. “He’s strong defensively and he can break the line,” he said. “He’s here until the end of the season and he’ll be a good signing for us.”

With Moseley losing at home to Rotherham on Saturday, Knights held on to tenth spot in the 12-strong league.
