Doncaster-born Michael Hills can’t wait for top flight challenge

DONCASTER-born ace Michael Hills is confident his London Welsh side will be ready for their debut Premiership campaign.

The former Doncaster Knights flanker captained the Exiles as they got their first taste of competitive action since their top flight status was confirmed at the second leg of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s Series – winning the round at Edgeley Park.

And Hills, who came through the ranks at Castle Park before heading to Sale, insists the arrivals of Welsh international pair Gavin Henson and Sonny Parker, as well as recent signings Tom Arscott and Nick Runciman, will put them in a great position for their Premiership opener against Leicester.

He said: “We’re getting boys like Gavin coming in and lifting the team with his experience and his talent and it can only make the boys want to work harder and learn from the way he plays.

“We’re going to go in confident because that’s who we are as a team and all I can say is that for that first game we’re going to be firing on all cylinders. But the boys who have come in have all brought something a little bit different; Sonny has got great experience with the Ospreys and Wales.

“We’ve also got people like Tom Arscott and Nick Runciman to name just a couple.

“Nick signed the other day from Gloucester and brings Premiership experience and it makes all the guys who are here work hard for London Welsh.”

On Friday night, Welsh brought in a number of sevens experts and proved different class to the rest of the teams on show, with Hills grabbing a try in the opening victory over Sale.

Hills said: “We took the tournament seriously as we’re flying the London Welsh flag and it’s going to be a big season for us and we needed to start it off well.”

The former Hill House School pupil added: “The boys are excited for the start of the Premiership season.”
