Davey’s despair as Knights’ slump continues

DEJECTED director of rugby Brett Davey expressed his disappointment at the ‘end of season feeling’ which he believes has taken over at Castle Park.
The Knights’ whimpering end to the season continued as they slipped to a 40-19 defeat to London Welsh, their eighth straight loss.
Davey was left frustrated with a lack of passion from his side.
He said: “It looks like that end of season feeling has come in.
“That’s really hard to take and I’m struggling with it.
“I just never felt we were playing with any passion or endeavour.
“We allowed a half decent side to come here and completely dictate the game which is really disappointing.
“There are players who go out there week in, week out and put their hands up however the game is panning out.
“It’s not fair on those players if there are others out there not doing the same.”
The Knights led 14-13 at half time with tries from Fred Burdon and Matt Challinor.
But Davey admitted afterwards he never expected his side to win.
He said: “Even when we went in winning I didn’t really expect us to win.
“It was a disappointing aftenoon.
“We lost so much ball going forward which is down to attitude as much as anything.
“The points we conceded were from our mistakes.
“It’s not been a case of sides creating plenty of chances against us, it’s just been from us giving points away.
“It wasn’t good.”
Davey was also disappointed with the performance of official Steven Lee who has refereed three of the Knights’ last six games.
He said: “We weren’t happy about the appointment and we let our feelings known but we’ve got to put up with it.
“I just don’t get what needs to be done about it.
“To blame the defeat solely on the referee would be unfair but he’s not helped.”
The Knights have a blank weekend but return to action the following Saturday with their penultimate game of the season against Nottingham at Castle Park.
Davey insists the target is to pick a win up from the final two games but knows he faces an uphill task in restoring his side’s confidence.
He said: “We’ll look at trying to get a win from somewhere.
“Obviously confidence is low but we need to get a performance from them.
“We need to make sure we don’t do ourselves a disservice by ending the season like this.”
