Doncaster Phoenix face their stiffest test of the season on Saturday when they travel to early Yorkshire One leaders York.

Newly promoted Phoenix have won three out of four this season and go into this weekend’s game on the back of a 29-24 win over Pontefract.

Chris Planchant got the hosts off to a great start with a try after just seven minutes which fly half Dan Storey converted.

Pontefract hit back with a penalty shortly after but Ryan Peacey added a second try for Doncaster on 20 minutes to put Phoenix 12-3 ahead.

The visitors added a second penalty on the half hour mark, and a try five minutes from the half time whistle brought them back to within a point of Phoenix.

A third penalty then put the visitors 12-14 ahead but that lead only lasted two minutes before second row Dan Smith touched down, with Storey converting.

Ten minutes later former Knights number eight Planchant added another try which Storey converted to make it 26-14.

Pontefract hit back with a converted try but Storey added a late penalty to extend Doncaster’s lead. A last minute penalty from the visitors gave them a deserved losing bonus point.

Phoenix are fourth in the early standings.

Wath go to Pontefract on the back of their first Yorkshire One defeat of the season, 25-28 at home to Old Brodleians.

In North One East Wheatley Hills travel to Driffield following last weekend’s 14-24 home defeat to Rochdale.

Following a 20-5 reverse against Leeds Medics, Thorne will be hoping for better luck when they go to Old Grovians in Yorkshire Three.
