THE Dons have suffered a major blow to their promotion campaign after top points scorer Tom Hodson was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Winger Hodson (pictured) broke his thumb during the 44-30 win at South Wales Scorpions on Sunday, a game where he kicked 12 points.

The 21-year-old will spend the next six weeks in plaster and is likely to be out for ten weeks in total, ruling him out until the play offs at least.

Head coach Tony Miller said: “It’s a massive blow for the club and I really feel for the lad.

“He’s been one of our most consistent performers this season and he’s quickly become a favourite with the club’s fans and supporters.

“I’d like to wish him a speedy recovery and thank him for his efforts – he will be missed.”

Hodson has scored 17 tries and kicked 51 goals in league and cup action this season.

The lightning-fast wide man has forged a productive relationship with Lee Waterman and Paul Cooke, both of whom will be in line to assume kicking responsibilities in his absence.

Hodson’s last six goals came at South Wales where the Dons quelled a threatened fight back from the hosts.

Two tries from Waterman plus efforts from Stewart Sanderson and Mick Butterfield had the Dons 20-6 ahead but the Scorpions reduced the deficit to two points by half time.

Another try from Butterfield plus a Craig Fawcett brace and a Carl Hughes effort took the Dons out of sight however.

Miller’s trigger happy outfit passed the 500 point mark for the season and opened up a 13 point cushion in the promotion places with the eight try performance.

The Dons have a blank weekend due to the Northern Rail Cup but return to action on July 15 when table topping Barrow visit the Keepmoat.
