Dons star Paul Cooke set to face Knights
PAUL Cooke is in line to make his home debut for the Dons in Sunday’s Northern Rail Cup clash with York City Knights (3pm).
The former Super League star played in Wednesday night’s comfortable win at Gateshead Thunder.
But the majority of Dons fans will get their first glimpse of Cooke in the blue and gold at the Keepmoat Stadium today.
Coach Tony Miller said: “All being well, Paul will make his home debut on Sunday.
“He’s had a really positive impact on everyone already and just having him around the place has made a difference to the other players here.
“They look up to him as a player - and we’re delighted to have him at Doncaster.”
Last Sunday’s postponement at the Thunderdome meant the Dons’ season got off to a false start.
And Miller will now rotate his squad for the visit of York with his team facing two games in the space of five days - although he told the Free Press that it was always his intention to use his entire playing squad during the build-up to the Dons’ opening Championship One fixture with Whitehaven on March 11.
“Everyone will get an opportunuity to stake their claim for a starting spot in these four Northern Rail Cup games,” said Miller.
“That was always my intention.
“York do not have a game during the week so we need to freshen up the side on Sunday and make sure we’re full of energy.”
Andy Townend is likely to miss out against York as he continues to nurse the broken hand he suffered in the pre-season friendly defeat against Sheffield.
n The Dons’ new cheerleading squad are on the look-out for new recruits.
Doncaster’s RLC Rockets, who are based in Edlington, are holding a free trial session today at the Keepmoat Stadium at 2pm.
Places in the squad are available for children aged 6-16.
