Here is my main selection for today’s racing:

Thursday 25th September

PRINCE GAGARIN

Newmarket 2.35 WIN

Newmarket’s three-day Cambridgeshire meeting opens on the Rowley Mile today, and while it might have lost star attractions such as the Middle Park Stakes, Sun Chariot Stakes and Fillies’ Mile, it remains one of the higlights of the autumn calendar. I’m sure that, at one stage, Ed Dunlop had high hopes of running this colt in a Group contest at the meeting, only for him to flop in a warm renewal of the Acomb Stakes at York last time. He fell asleep in the stalls and then found things happening all too quickly for him over a sharp 7f on fast ground. He must race off top weight here, but an ordinary nursery handicap represents a dramatic drop in class. He is sure to relish the step-up in trip to a stiff 1m, not to mention a more suitable surface, while it has to be a bonus that Ryan Moore retains the ride.
