WOODLANDS cyclist Graham Huck just could not resist getting on his bike one more time.

But this particular weekend ride was no ordinary outing with his Doncaster Wheelers teammates.

For the 63-year-old fancied another crack at the National 12-hour time trial championship - some 31 years after he last competed in the gruelling event.

And Huck only went and won the North Midlands section of the event held near York, while also finishing second in the 60-65 age category.

The former British time trial champion completed a sensational 227 miles, turning the clock back on a famous team victory for the Wheelers three decades ago.

Huck said: “I just love cycling and I thought to myself, let’s have another go at the 12-hour event.

“I’m out most weekends cycling for six or seven hours at one go, so I thought why not?

“It’s a tough event but I had people supporting me on the day and keeping me fed along the route and I really enjoyed it.

“I didn’t expect to win it so I’m pleased about that, although I also wanted to win my age category and ended up finishing second.

“I’ve been having a few problems with my back but I got through it and felt great, no backache or neckache.

“So I owe a big debt of gratitude to my physio Vicky Chapman.

“I wouldn’t know what to do without cycling,” he added. “It’s like a drug.

“And it’s great to see the guys at the Olympics giving the sport such a boost in this country.”

Huck, who last rode the 12-hour event in 1981, was part of a three-strong Wheelers team, alongside Allan Robson and Bob Bickerstaffe, that won the British Best All Rounder (BBAR) team event in 1975.

The trio rode a total of 790.43miles between them, including 270 miles from Huck which was good enough to secure bronze in the individual competition.
