GRAHAM Briggs is celebrating the perfect finish to his “best year in cycling” after being called up by Team GB, writes Hayley Paterson.

Rossington’s reigning British number one road racer and Elite Circuit Series champion will represent Great Britain in Melbourne in Australia next month.

Briggs, 29, last wore a British jersey in 2003.

He said: “I was told of a spot available in the squad and had to grab the opportunity with both hands.

“I’ve had the best year of my career and am really pleased that the Team GB coaches have been keeping an eye on me, it’s a great confidence boost.

“These kind of races in Melbourne are my speciality really because they are fast-paced and require a lot of sprint work so I’m looking forward to testing myself against tough competition.

“I’ve taken a lot from my previous time of representing Britain,” he added.

“I’ve had a lot of races since then and feel like I’m more experienced and can use that to my advantage.

“I’ve spent weeks training hard and haven’t really had a break until only recently when I went to Lanzarote for a week.

“I was cycling over there which was good preparation for the heat I may experience in Australia because it’ll be about 30 degrees there in January.”

Briggs recently signed a contract extension with Team Raleigh-GAC for the 2013 season.

He is already in Australia training for Victoria’s three-day Bay Criteriums and the Herald Sun Tour.

The Rossington Wheelers member was also delighted to hear that the 2014 Tour De France will begin in Yorkshire.

He said: “It’s fantastic for Yorkshire. Hopefully it’ll encourage even more people into cycling because it’s been a massive year for the sport.”
