BASKETBALL: Brilliance of Barnsley’s Barton
A POWERHOUSE 37-point performance from Jake Barton helped Barnsley Leaders basketballers stay undefeated in the Killamarsh Tournament to share top spot with Birkdale A.
Point guard Thomas Bradshaw was influential as the Leaders opened against a strong Rotherham Hawks on Sunday. Level at 8-8, Barton then netted two and Hawks scored a late basket.
Barton and Bradshaw dominated as the Leaders proved too strong for Birkdale B finishing 32-8.
Birkdale A held a 11-4 lead before Barton hit six, and a free shot from Amanda Lowrence levelled at 11-11, leaving both unbeaten in the tournament.
Darfield Dunkers Rookies introduced Upperwood Y4 player Callum Mitchell for his first game alongside Matthew Poyton, Josh Jubb, Ben Godfrey and Paddy Poyton along with youngters Freddie Poyton (Y3) and Amy Currie (Y2).
Ex-Leaders top-scoring U13 forward Declan Cooper became Rookies coach for the first time as they lost 6-0 against Birkdale, held the lead until the final shot against Derby Arrows then lost 5-4, and finished with a 6-2 Birkdale defeat.
