More misery for Darfield

STAFFORCE SOUTH YORKSHIRE CRICKET LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION Hallam 184-9 Darfield 40 FOR the second time in a fortnight Darfield were demolished and dumped all out for just 40 as their nightmare season refused to get better in a hefty defeat at now second placed Hallam.

Jim Tasker opened with his fifth half century of the season as Hallam started well but their ride was not quite a simple as they expected with Darfield managing to hold them back well. South African Graham Fawkes hit a decent 30 that pushed Hallam up to a healthy 184-9 from 50 overs. Paul Wilkinson and Andrew Townsley both claimed three wickets for Darfield.

Hallam moved up to second with this win and are looking to replicate the progress that seemingly unstoppable Treeton have made. The Sheffield side did manage to reproduce the devastating attacking performance that Treeton showed against Darfield and removed them for the same paltry score but did so in more ruthless fashion.

Treeton offered the courtesy of allowing the first half of the Darfield order to put some runs on the board before sending them off. Hallam did not as they all departed for ducks. Fawkes provided the fireworks with an impressive 4-17 while Humphrey Emery was even better with 5-12 figures.

Darfield are now 11 points off safety at the half way point of the season and have yet to pick up a win.

Wath 163-5 Barnsley 2nd XI 160-9

ANY title aspirations left at Moor Road now look to be just hopeful wishes as Wath let the Treeton juggernaut move further clear despite another impressive win over Barnsley Seconds.

In another season, the excellent improvement from Wath may have been enough to land them the title and such slip ups as being unable to remove the final Barnsley pairing would have not cost them much. But any slip up by any side is proving devastating as Treeton roar off into the distance, and Wath's niggle saw them drop into third behind Hallam.

Peter Hadfield and Simon Potter both reached half tons and added 71 for the third wicket as Barnsley made decent early progress. Hadfield hit seven fours in his 56 while Potter smashed eight in his 50. Wath began to bite back with Steve Reynolds bowling effectively to take 5-26 and Lesroy Weekes claiming 3-29 as the wickets fell quickly to 160-9 at the close.

Opener Matt Burrows was in good form to stroke 72 and Johnny Younis supported well until he was run out for 30.

Wath lost five wickets in reaching the winning score.Elsecar 123 Houghton Main 240-9

AFTER showing signs of the old Elsecar in last week's comfortable triumph over Whitley Hall, the demons returned to Armroyd Lane as a middle order collapse again resulted in defeat with the well progressing Houghton Main taking advantage.

Elsecar made quick inroads with the ball to reduce them to 29-4 but Australian Jason Knowles and skipper Ernie Heseltine rebuilt the innings with a 92 parnership until the latter fell victim to an excellent return catch by Alan Shore to depart with 35.

The innings then exploded when Ali Raza joined Knowles in the centre to add 86 in quick time before a mix-up saw Knowles out for 92 from 101 balls. Raza continued on to reach 50 in just 32 balls as Houghton made 240-9 Manaj Chanaka taking four wickets to continue his excellent start to life with Elsecar.

The runs came thick and fast as Elsecar started their reply but the wickets fell in tandem. Jason Meadows went for 24 and skipper Ian Swallow reached 33 but a delighted Houghton forced a collapse on the fragile middle order and the innings was in full disarray at 90-7. Chanaka's influence was still felt as he produced a quickfire 24 from 14 balls but the innings concluded at 123. Mo Raza finished with 4-39 and Iftikhar Afzal 3-17 to orchestrate the demise.

DIVISION ONE

Rockingham Colliery 172-8 Bradfield 165

A NARROW win over Bradfield sent Rockingham eight points clear at the top of the second tier, largely thanks to the tenacity of skipper Andy Moore at Hoyland Common.

Michael Brown opened with 37 and Mark Wilkinson added 35 as Rockingham posted a total of 172-8. Paul Lampkins and Andy Heath each claimed three wickets for Bradfield as the attack effectively held back the league leaders.

Moore's contribution to the Rockingham attack was vital in picking up the win. He secured the first four wickets with the Bradfield score at 68 but a fightback threatened Rockingham's chances as Lampkins and Josh Gray boosted the total together by 46 and leave the side in excellent position on 145-6.

But Moore turned hero once more to disposed of Gray for 20 with a catch off his own bowling. Lampkins took his side within seven runs when he fell for 36 and the Bradfield innings closed shortly afterwards for 165-5 with five balls remaining. Moore ended with 6-54 which handed his side the win.Mexborough 177 Thorncliffe 178-8

A KHADIM Hussain hattrick was not enough as Mexborough's chances of gatecrashing the promotion race seemed to slip away for good after defeat to relegation threatened Thorncliffe.

The return of Rakesh Solanki to the Thorncliffe setup has rejuvinated the side and his influence was felt at Hampden Road as he returned figures of 4-33 with Mexborough falling to 177 all out.

Veteran Joe Pratt had opened with 37 while Ryan Tingle smashed 53 but other significant contributions were lacking.

Solanki again took centre stage, this time with the bat as he stood firm through the entire innings to score an unbeaten 109 on the way to victory. Hussain's hat-trick left Thorncliffe with two batsmen remaining and still a lot to do but Solanki forced his side through to the win at 178-8.

Wickersley B 199 Elsecar B 232-9

ELSECAR'S survival hopes were given a major boost as they pulled off an excellent win over fellow strugglers Wickersley to move level on points with the safety mark.

The teenage pairing of Callum Johnson and Chris Pedler played a major part in the triumph as they added 105 runs for the third wicket until the former left for 39 with the score on 141-3. Skipper Mark Kingston added 38 as he teamed with Pedler to push the score to 204. Youngster Pedler left on the same score after recording a superb 84. The innings closed at 232-9 with Mark Richardson claiming five of the wickets for Wickerlsey.

Will Asher and Graham Cooke added 71 for the first wicket with the latter staying on to reach 81 with 12 fours for good measure. The Wickersley innings floundered against the experienced attack of Graham Swallow who took 3-56 and Graham Higgins who ended with 4-49. Wickersley closed 33 runs short on 199.

Dronfield 232-8 Dearne 162

ONCE unstoppable Dearne suffered their second successive defeat as they were beaten by 70 runs at Dronfield leaving them barely hanging onto the top spot they so emphatically snatched over the first half of the season.

Dronfield posted a large total of 232-8 after Anthony Firth and Adam Marsh added 80 runs for the fourth wicket while Tim Vernon and Steve Coleman both reached 34.

Jonathan Scaife ensured some success for Dearne as he claimed 4-35.

Opener Dane Froggett hit 36 and Scaife 41 as Dearne started well but there was little in the way of support and the innings crumbled to 162 all out with Andy Myers claiming four victims.

Parkgate 189 Hallam B 193-9

DEFEAT for Parkgate against fellow strugglers Hallam left them 10 points off both the Sheffield side and safety as they failed to kill off a potent final partnership.

A sparkling knock of 90 from Russ Eggleston was boosted with 35 from Dave Watson as Parkgate found some joy on the Roundwood surface but a remarkable spell of blowing from Mak Hill who took 5-4 in 21 balls crafted a nosedive from 161-5 to 189 all out.

Hallam were in trouble at 23-3 but Joe Hetherington and Jack Snelling added 93 for the fourth wicket to improve their chances. Hetherington smashed 12 fours on his way to 72 while the final wicket pairing produced 21 runs to take them to victory in the penultimate over.

EAST CONFERENCE

Dearne B 139 Rockingham B 164-7

ROCKINGHAM moved nine points clear atop the East Conference with a comfortable win over Dearne at Goldthorpe.

Matt Lambert top scored with 43 as Rockingham posted 164-7, a total that Dearne never seemed able to threaten. Despite 38 from Ryan Atkinson and 40 from skipper Nick Petty, Dearne managed just 139 before they fell, short by 25 runs. Ged McInnerney claimed 4-33 for victorious Rockingham.

Houghton Main B 266-6 Mexborough B 50

THE BATTLE for the third promotion spot from the fifth tier continues to heat up after Houghton Main staked their claim with an emphatic win over Mexborough at Middlecliffe.

The team finishing with the third highest points total from the two conferences combined will win promotion. Barnsley Thirds currently occupy that place but defeat to Warmsworth hit their progress and left them level on points with conference rivals Doncaster Town Thirds and Mexborough.

Houghton's overwhelming win over Mexborough left them four points off that spot. Andrew Higginbottom opened with 72, Darren Neale contributed 55 and Zulfiqar Ali smashed 50 as Houghton posted a large total of 266-6.

Then Tan Pirabakaran took over and his accuracy and speed destroyed Mexborough. The Houghton wizzard claimed 6-6 in nine overs as Mexborough collapsed to 50 all out.
