Whitley were coasting to victory at 130-1, thanks to openers James Moorhouse (58) and Matthew Milburn (42), before they slumped to 149-6.
Neil Longhurst was 39 not out and Whitley had three wickets to spare when the winning runs were scored. Townsend claimed 3-52 for Doncaster.
