Wheatley Hills serve up a tennis bonanza for all

ANYONE for Tennis?

If the annual Wimbledon Championships, which got under way on Monday at the All England Club, has whetted your appetite for the sport and you are looking for something a bit better than the park courts around the borough, then Wheatley Hills would like to hear from you.

The friendly four-court club, based in Greenhouse Road, caters for players of all ages and abilities.

“Wheatley is a social club for all the family there are regular fun days and afternoons throughout the summer,” head coach Myles Collett told The Star.

“I run a ladies’ beginners group on Friday from 5-6.30pm and non-members are also welcome to give it a try.

Juniors from as young as five attend the hour-long sessions junior sessions on Saturday mornings.

The Under-10s session starts at 9.30am with the Under-12s session following at 10.30am with the 12 and over session starting at 11.30pm.

“Non-members are welcome to give try on a £5 pay and play basis,” said Myles. “Club official Janet Arrowsmith is always on hand to welcome parents or guardians at the clubhouse.”

The club runs a number of teams in the Sheffield Junior League, which caters for Under-8s to Under-18s during both the summer and winter, and run junior squad sessions throughout the week.

Adult members ‘mix in’ from 1.30pm and 2pm respectively on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The club run three ladies and men’s team in both local and regional leagues.

“The ladies first team won the South Yorkshire League title last year and are looking strong again this year,” said Myles. “They are also hoping to get promotion to the next division in the Yorkshire League.

“Men’s tennis is very competitive with a weekly doubles tournament held every Friday evening.”

Myles and fellow coach Lucy Wright, hold regular monthly competitions for the juniors at the club and at Danum Academy with whom the club has close connections.

Both organisations work together to run the Doncaster Schools’ tennis competitions.
