Viva Espana for cricketers

When the winter chill rules out cricket in Darfield, why not jet off to Spain?

That is exactly what members of Darfield Cricket Academy will do next week to compete in an international tournament.

The academy, run by former England international Paul Nixon, has teamed up with a group in Valencia for the series of tours over the next two years which will see the Darfield group compete in numerous matches against local sides, colleges and international opposition including a team from Malta.

The first group of students will fly out for a fornight on December 8 with another set leaving next March.

Former Leicestershire ace Nixon – who will also be present on the tours – said: “Such opportunities come very rarely in a cricketer’s life and I’m glad our academy is offering the chance to go abroad and play cricket.

“Hopefully the lads will enjoy this experience.”

Academy head coach James Ward will oversee the tour.

The academy has recently teamed up with Barnsley Metrodome and is currently recruiting students for next year.
