Peter Elliott says February’s British Indoor Championships in Sheffield will provide an early indicator of how GB athletes will fair at next summer’s World Championships.
Speaking at the official launch for the British Championships at the English Institute of Sport, Rotherham Olympian Elliott says the Sheffield crowd will be the first to see if the strong performances of domestic athletes in 2014 can be carried towards next summer’s World Championships in China.
“Our athletes had a fantastic summer with the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships,” Elliott told the Star. “This event will be a really good indicator of how the winter training has gone heading into next summer and particularly the World Championships.
“I would imagine we will see those athletes here who are hoping to make a big impression in 2015, just a year out from the Rio Olympics.
“It’s a fantastic stepping-stone event before the Worlds, right at the start of the year.”
Former Commonwealth champion and Olympic silver medallist Elliott is now operations director for EIS.
Tickets for the Sainsbury’s Indoor British Championships at the EIS – which takes place on February 14 and 15 next year – are available now from britishathletics.org.uk.
