Taekwondo: Scorpion stars celebrate Commonwealths selection for England

Scorpion Taekwondo are punching the air in delight after several club members clinched Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships selections.

The Doncaster club followed up scores of medals at the British Taekwondo Championships with 12 of its students being selected to represent Team England at the Commonwealths in Edinburgh, November 15-16.

Those selected are cadets Tom Smith and Simon Abley, as well as juniors Ryan Butt, Brandon Naylor, Dominic Naylor and Emily Watson.

Watson, 17, has also been selected for the seniors team alongside club mates Katrina Snape, Stella Whitehead, Kevin Lidgett, Daniel McGeoghan, Scott and Jamie Abley.

The club’s Peter Adamsons, who coached at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, will be head coach for Team England and the senior team with Scorpion Taekwondo’s Adele Deakes also set to be a senior team coach.

Whitehead, who won her tenth national title at the British Championships in Manchester, will also represent the GB National Team at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester which starts tomorrow.

The club took a small Scorpion team to compete at the Quest Open. The side did not disappoint at the EIS in Sheffield as they clinched the first team trophy following nine golds, four silvers and two bronze medals from 15 competitors.

Scorpion Taekwondo have bases in Scot Lane, Bentley, Stainforth and Arksey.
