European Games medallist Jarvis Parkinson is on the right path to Olympic and Commonwealth Games glory.

That is the verdict of Doncaster Dartes secretary Wayne Cole who proudly watched the 16-year-old win a silver medal in Baku last week.

Parkinson, from Hatfield Woodhouse, swam superbly to win silver in the 200m Individual Medley despite suffering from a shoulder injury in the build-up to the competition.

His Doncaster teammate Joe Litchfield also received a silver medal for his part in the success of the mixed 4x100m medley relay team.

Cole said: “The pair of them have done fantastically well.

“They are both an inspiration to all of our kids and what they have achieved proves if you work hard you’ll get results.

“The club is very proud of them.

“Both of them have got a very good chance of going all the way and competing at future Olympic and Commonwealth Games,” he added.

“The next step is the Junior Commonwealth Games in Samoa in September. They’re both on the shortlist and we’re waiting to hear if they’ve made the cut.

“Rio 2016 will probably come too soon but the 2020 Olympics are a realistic target.”

Reigning British champion Parkinson, who was the slowest qualifier for the 200m IM final, shaved almost two seconds off his qualifying time to come within a whisker of winning gold.

Immediately after the race, the former Trinity Academy pupil said: “I don’t really know what to say.

“To think I came into the competition injured - I could barely swim a week before the event - and I’ve come away with a silver medal is just incredible.

“It’s not just about the medal either. It was an amazing experience being in the Olympic-style village and here at a multi-sport event.

“I can’t speak. It’s unreal. I can’t get over how happy I am.”

Askern Spa swimmer Litchfield, who lives in Wakefield, set a new personal best of 56:92 in the 100m backstroke and swam in the heats of the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
