Cannon Hall: spectacular setting for the South Yorkshire Sainsbury's School Games' first eveer cross country

Barnsley’s Cannon Hall will play host to the inaugural South Yorkshire Sainsbury’s School Games cross country finals today.

A total of 320 pupils have qualified for the competition in the grounds of the Georgian country house.

Youngsters from Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield will complete 800m and 1,500m courses in a bid to win gold, silver and bronze medals.

The event is one of five sporting finals which make up the 2015 Games programme. Badminton, trampolining and the winter multi-sport finals have been contested and the summer multi-sport finals will be held in Rotherham on July 1.

Simon Pugh, development manager at South Yorkshire Sport, which organises the Games, said: “This is the first time we have put on a cross country competition as part of the games and Cannon Hall is a spectacular setting for the event.”
