Sheffield/Dronfield boxing: Lewis is Hobson’s choice

Lewis Taylor knows he isn’t the only boxer that Dennis Hobson has weaved his magic for.

The Sheffield promoter, who groomed Clinton Woods and Jamie McDonnell to world champion status, has a knack of manouvering fighters towards title shots.

And Hobson recently beat American giants Golden Boy in purse bids for Darlington bantam Stuart Hall’s IBF title fight with Randy Caballero, securing an important home advantage, possibly at Sheffield Arena in October.

Dronfield’s Taylor is overjoyed his handler has managed to land him an English middleweight title eliminator against Stairfoot’s Matthew Mallin, 23, (Octagon Centre, Sheffield, Sept 13.)

Hobson is also scheduling Liam Cameron, who is on the same bill, a Commonwealth eliminator tussle too.

Taylor said on video at thestar.co.uk: “Dennis had done well to get this title eliminator. It is obviously a step in the right direction. We wanted bigger fights.”

The 24-year-old added: “It’s what you dream of when you first start out, you just want to get in there winning these belts. I don’t know how Dennis does it! He’s managed to get me the eliminator and I’m going to do him proud. “

Taylor hopes a victory in the 10-rounder will boost him in the top 10 domestic rankings. “Dennis has mentioned trying to get Chris Eubank and possibly even try to go for Billy Joe Saunders. They are the fights I have wanted. Dennis is good at what he does so he may be able to pull rabbit out of a hat.”

Taylor recognised he has got to “make sure I turn up on the night” against his Barnsley opponent. “I just have to keep winning” he says.

“As for Liam, I hope he does well; he has got a Commonwealth eliminator (super middleweight.) If we are both fighting for these sort of titles we are going to be on bigger shows.”
