Racing: friday preview

Hernando Torres is in a relative purple patch and can make it a hat-trick in the Weatherbys Bank Handicap at Musselburgh.

Mick Easterby’s charge snapped a lengthy losing streak when triumphing at Wolverhampton in January and he proved that was no flash in the pan when switching to the turf to good effect at Newcastle earlier in April.

The seven-year-old ran off a mark of 60 on the all-weather and was subsequently hiked 5lb for his length and a quarter verdict in what was not the strongest of heats.

However, Hernando Torres showed he was still more than competitive off his revised perch when running out a two-and-a-quarter-length winner of an apprentice contest on his most recent outing.

His rivals were probably nothing to write home about, but he did it in good enough style to suggest he might not be at the end of his tether just yet.

A further 7lb rise is clearly not ideal but he is still at the lower end of the weights here and appears to like seven-furlong trip.

Bunce can strike gold for Linda Perratt in the Weatherbys Private Banking Handicap after a fine effort earlier in the week at Ayr.

The seven-year-old looked a good deal sharper for his debut run earlier in the month when chasing home Margrets Gift, going down by just a head at the line.

Perrault is bred to be a bit better than Chepstow’s Alan Bushell Racing Maiden Stakes as a relation of Grand Lodge, but nevertheless this 10-furlong heat is a decent starting point for the year.

The Rip Van Winkle colt had just one juvenile start at the backend of last year, running an eyecatching race when second in a Newbury maiden.

He was very keen early on that day but stayed on all the way to line over a mile, suggesting a step up in trip would be well within his compass in due course. Ralph Beckett duly takes a bit of a leap here but Perrault can rise to the challenge.
