WOMBWELL Main picked up five valuable points in their battle against relegation but this proved scant consolation as the three wicket defeat came at nearest rivals Glass Houghton.

The defeat left second bottom Main seven points adrift of Glass Houghton at the half way point of the campaign.

A magnificent 90 from Joseph Ashurst laid the foundation for Wombwell’s total of 224.

Darren Sharp claimed 4-63 for Glass Houghton who replied with 226-7, with Gareth Portman leading the way on 61.

Neil Spruce claimed 4-46.

Wombwell’s woes were worsened as fellow strugglers Hemsworth MW pulled 17 points ahead after a shock two wicket win at leaders South Kirkby.

It was a day for the bowlers at Millars Walk and Kirkby felt the full force of that as they were surprisingly skittled for just 84 with Greg Johnson’s 34 providing the majority and Dylan Moran’s 13 the only other double figure contribution.

Simon Kemp led the Hemsworth attack with 4-25.

Despite the modest target, the chase was far from simple with Nick Percival in particular making life difficult.

He took four catches and a run out to back up the tight bowling.

But Richard Locke’s 34 held the Hemsworth knock together and they held on to reach 87-8.

James Scott claimed 4-38, Ben Percival 2-24 and Dave Rollin 2-1 in impressive spells for Kirkby who dropped points for only the second time this term.
