Joe’s joy turns to agony

It was a weekend of mixed emotions for swimmer Joe Roebuck at the British Championships in Sheffield.

Roebuck, aiming to force his way into the squad for the World Championships in Barcelona this year, won his 200m butterfly final, taking the touch ahead of Roberto Pavoni.

Roebuck turned first at the halfway stage and just pulled ahead in the final 100m to take the gold medal in 1.56.49.

But the joy soon turned to disappointment when Roebuck discovered that the time was one-hundredth of a second outside the required mark to make the plane to Barcelona.

“I had a disappointing time tonight,” Roebuck later tweeted.

“I couldn’t have been closer to the qualifying time!”

The Rotherham-born Olympic swimmer later posted on his Twitter profile: “Congratulations to all those selected for the Barcelona World Championships.”
