A MEMBER of the Isle of Axholme Fencing Club has been crowned champion at the recent World Veterans’ Championships.

Carol Wengraf (73) beat all comers when she triumphed in the over-70s category, ladies sabre, in Porec, Croatia.

The self-confessed adrenaline junkie was one of 400 sportsmen and women who descended on Eastern Europe for the annual event.

Carol, who lives in Derbyshire, duelled with opponents from Japan, Australia, Germany, France and the USA to claim the title.

The grandmother-of-one secured two medals and a trophy as well as hearing the national anthem played as the Union Jack was raised in recognition of her victory.

She said: “It’s actually a very well-run competition, one of the very best I have ever been in, and I was part of a 50-strong British contingent.

“It did get harder and the adrenaline is pouring out of you but it was one of those days when everything just flowed.”

Carol only took up the sport 15 years ago when her son developed a passion for fencing.

“He started when he was 11 and got to be quite good. I used to take him around various competitions.”

“I got a bit tired of trailing around with him and thought maybe I should try it for myself.

“It’s changed my life completely and I get a lot out of it because I am an adrenaline junkie.”

Trained initially by Isle coach Dave Jerry, at Hull Renaissance Fencing Club, Carol later joined the Isle club 10 years ago – making the weekly 110 mile round trip from her Peak Distict home.

Said Dave: “Many weekends of the year sees Carol traveling all over the country for mainly veterans fencing events although she still enters the occasional open competition.

“Carol says the attraction for her in the sport is that it keeps you fit, both physically and mentally.

“The social benefit of fencing is that you can meet like-minded people of all ages and fencing ability. Indeed the highlight for club members this week is that they have competed against a world champion.”

Carol hopes to defend her title at next year’s championships in Krems, Austria.

l The club has a junior section which meets every Wednesday at West Butterwick Village Hall from 6.30pm to 8pm, and a senior class which follows, from 8pm to 9.30pm.

All kit is provided. For more information contact Dave on 01427 874109.
