BARNSLEY Leaders U16s endured a tough start to 2011 as they faced Conference pace setters Durham Wildcats.
Not only had sickness ravaged the squad, an untimely vehicle breakdown robbed them of further players meaning only six could line up.
The home side outscored the Leaders by a two to one ratio to finish with a winning margin of 106–51.
Making full use of a significant height advantage, the Wildcats raced to a 30-6 lead in the first period.
Seven points from Lewis Stables, six from Mike Watson and four each from Jack Hallsworth and Zac Danks gave the Leaders an improved 21-26 split in the second period.
The six Leaders players continued to work hard with a 17-31 split in the third period but the Wildcats again pulled away with a 15-3 run in the last seven minutes.
On Saturday the U16s travel to the North East again to meet Tees Valley Mohawks with a 5.30 tip off.
Leaders U13s are also in action on Saturday at Rotherham where they take on Rotherham Hawks and Gateshead.
Sessions for primary school pupils continue at Darfield Foulstone school sports hall on Saturdays from 12.30 to 2pm.
