Danum Eagles gave arguably the best junior side in England a genuine scare before bowing out of the national play-offs.

Eagles U18s trailed North Premier champions Cheshire Wire by just two points at half time in Sunday’s last 16 tie.

But they were made to rue “three minutes of madness” in the third quarter as Wire went 13 ahead and eventually won 94-80.

Head coach Bob Martin said: “Our lads left nothing on the floor and gave Cheshire a very hard battle.

“We just lost our way for three minutes. Turnovers on three straight offences cost us dearly and against the North Premier champions you can’t do that.

“It was a good team effort as usual though and the players gave everything they had for the cause.

“Coach Ross Stafford has done a fantastic job,” he added. “It has been a good season.”

Eagles were backed by a big following in Cheshire - including former player and Manchester Giants start Robert Marsden, recently named BBL Player of the Month.
