Athlerics: Rotherham Harriers impress in National Road Relay Championships

Rotherham Harriers excelled to finish fifth in the women’s race at the National Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Sam Johnson got them off to a good start with fourth place on the opening long stage with a time of 29:46. Natasha Hatswell (18:46) took them into the bronze medal position which was held by Jenny Blizard (18:48), coming back to form nicely after a lengthy injury lay off. Stage four saw Steph Burns (32:47) hand over in fifth place and this was held by Emma Parkinson (19:13) and Alina Stepanchuk (19:25). This was Rotherham’s best ever position in this race where Aldershot retained their title comfortably from Leeds City.

A below strength Hallamshire team were 11th. Nicola Squires was their fastest long stage runner with 31:46 on the opening stage and Hannah Fletcher and Charlotte Ward were quickest on the short stage with 19:06.

In the men’s 12 stage race Rotherham were 23rd. Luke Cotter was their fastest short stage runner, picking up 14 place on stage 2 with 16:02 whilst Kyle Craib was quickest on the long stage with 28:14.

Hallamshire were 26th, their top runners being Tom Bains, 27:39 for the long stage and Connor Milnes with an excellent 15:47 on the short stage.
