LOOK WHAT YOU'D MISS
GOAL machine Adam Le Fondre gave Rotherham United a timely reminder of what they would have been missing as he netted the winner against Lincoln City in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
The Millers had a much easier time than expected in warding off potential suitors for the striker on transfer deadline day.
And two sighs of relief were heard in the town last night – one at 6pm when the window slammed shut, and one in the 47th minute of the Lincoln clash when Le Fondre's sixth goal of the season hit the back of the net.
Millers chairman Tony Stewart claimed on Tuesday that Plymouth Argyle had offered cash plus striker Rory Fallon in a bid to land Le Fondre.
Stewart said: "The offer from Plymouth was dismissed in seconds.
"As far as I am aware, Adam is enjoying playing his football for Rotherham United and has not expressed a desire to leave.
"Unless someone comes in with something ridiculous, we are not interested in selling Adam."
However, veteran Pilgrims boss Peter Reid rubbished the suggestion of the bid.
He said: "No we didn't.
"I would find it remarkable that the Plymouth manager doesn't know about an offer being made."
Nevertheless, the lack of interest and speculation over Le Fondre on Tuesday was surprising.
Suggestions were made that had Barnsley boss Mark Robins – who signed Le Fondre for Rotherham – been able to offload striker Iain Hume before the deadline, he would have returned to his former club with a bid.
Moore had hinted he was going to rest the striker for the Lincoln clash so Le Fondre's inclusion in a competition which is hardly a priority came as somewhat of a surprise.
And after a rather tame first period Le Fondre popped up just two minutes into the second half, latching onto Tom Newey's ball from the left and firing a deflected effort beyond Imps stopper Joe Anyon for his sixth goal of the young campaign.
Lining up alongside the striker was Jeremiah Ani who earned his first start.
Ani signed a one month deal last week after a successful trial spell and worked hard throughout his time on the pitch, without producing anything of real note.
Also receiving a first start was full back Jonny Mullins whose early Millers career has been blighted with injury.
The goal on 47 minutes saw an almost immediate relaxation spread through the Millers camp and they began to play the ball around with a great deal of confidence.
The approach should really have brought a deserved second and new skipper Ryan Cresswell almost netted a superb strike.
A long ball from Newey was brought down with fine skill by Cresswell who stepped inside and fired a left footed effort narrowly wide.
The Millers travel to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, a side who have also made a strong start to the season.
