London 2012 latest: Sarah Stevenson delivers oath at opening ceremony

DONCASTER'S very own Sarah Stevenson took the Olympic oath on behalf of all the athletes competing at London 2012 at a magical opening ceremony on Friday night.

Taekwondo star Stevenson, who has overcome personal tragedy and a career threatening injury to figure at London 2012, held a corner of the Olympic flag as she delivered the oath shortly before the Olympic was flame was lit.

Stevenson, watched by a sell-out crowd at the Olympic Stadium and a worldwide TV audience of one billion, swore that she and other athletes would commit themselves to "a sport without doping and without drugs".

The 29-year-old, competing at her fourth Olympics, hopes to win gold at the Games in honour of both of her parents who she lost last year.

Her father Roy died from a brain tumour in July and her mother Diana lost her battle with cancer three months later.

Stevenson was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list after becoming the most successful Taekwondo athlete in British history.
