Kell Brook will assume the role of a matador against the bull-like pressure of world champion Shawn Porter, says the Sheffield boxer’s trainer.
Dom Ingle believes the muscle-bound American’s game plan will be to “put his strength on Kell, rough him up, take him out of his stride, keep close, not give him the range to get his shots off.”
But if the similarly-unbeaten Brit is on his game, sheer power won’t be enough for Porter, says Ingle, adding: “It is going to be a bull and a matador. Matadors always kill bulls.”
As long as Brook can: “keep his cool and pick his shots and be accurate” in the face of expected onslaught, he will take the title off the IBF welterweight holder, he says.
Speaking on video at thestar.co.uk, Ingle said Brook’s conditioning compared favourably with the time he prepared for Devon Alexander; when he was said to be in the shape of his life. “He’s trained hard for this fight. The camp was nice and steady, he hasn’t had to force himself through it. He has been at Hallam University worked well there and is fit and strong.
“Kell’s coming to his peak now. He’s probably in the best shape he has ever been in. He has a smile on face because he knows he has done the work.”
Brook has been sparring opponents from France and Armenia.
Now in America, ahead of his date with destiny on August 16, he has a few tune-up sessions booked. “Eddie Hearn (promoter) has lined up a couple of kids on the recommendation of Paul Malignaggi” said Ingle. “He’ll do four or six rounds with them to sharpen up. It won’t be heavy sparring, just the icing on the cake” added the trainer.
“Kell keeps himself mentally prepared; he’s being doing this a long time. Getting hit round the head doesn’t sound much fun, but for Kell has been doing it all his life. He has not got a flaky mentality.”
Porter has recently taken the scalps of Alexander (pts) and Malignaggi (KO.) But Ingle says neither of those two possess the power at Brook’s disposal.
“When Kell hits you with accurate shots, it makes you think twice about jumping in” he said.
“Kell is not an inside fighter but he’s very accurate, his right hands and left hooks make you think twice about going in” he said.
