Tom Hill ABC boxer Conner Kelsall has gone through to the semi-finals of the National Schoolboy Championship after a quarter-final win over Jordan Walsh.

Kelsall, competing in the 38kg category at Havercroft Sports Centre, was drawn against Walsh, from Northside ABC.

And the youngster, who had advanced to this stage with a “confident and skilful display” against a more experienced opponent in the last round, again demonstrated his promise with a performance described by head coach Paul Neilson as “stunning”.

Kelsall won the bout with a unanimous decision from the judges, after winning each round with a versatile mixture of long range punches and inside work which frustrated Walsh, the North East champion.

“It has been a real team effort in getting to this stage with Conner,” Neilson said.

“He has worked hard in the gym, and fully deserves his place in the semi-finals next weekend.

“He is performing well enough to progress even further, and that’s all down to him and the support from all the coaches - including Tommy Wilson and Paul Haughian.

“He is the most improved boxer in the gym recently, and we are all looking forward to supporting him next weekend.”

Conner’s success is a further boost for the Tom Hill ABC, who have placed a more noticeable emphasis on youth boxers after moving back to their new headquarters at the Tom Hill youth club.

They recently had 13 boxers compete at a show at their new Denaby Miners Welfare base, and the host club emerged victorious in the majority of contests.
