The French defender had set his sights on moving up a division after rejecting the chance to stay at Leyton Orient, where he was captain.

But Baudry, who yesterday became Rovers’ fourth new arrival, told The Star that Ferguson was a decisive factor in his move to the Keepmoat Stadium.

“I didn’t really want to stay in League Two, I wanted to go back to League One,” said the 28-year-old centre back.

“But when I spoke to the manager he convinced me this was the place for me.

“I spent the day with Darren Ferguson and I loved the way he talked about football, the way he wants to play and what he wants to do here.

“I almost worked with Darren before so I knew him and I wanted to work with him. I think he’s one of the best managers in our league. The knowledge that he’s got is very impressive.

“I already knew this was a big club,” he added.

“It’s not really a League Two club, and the project here really excites me.

“And I think if the manager does what he wants to do then we can get straight back to League One and then challenge for promotion again. A team like Bournemouth has shown what you can do with a bit of momentum.

“It’s about getting on the right train. And when I spoke to the manager I felt like it’s the right one at the right time.”

Ferguson said: “He is going to be a real key player for us and was one of my top targets.

“He understands what I’m about and how I want to play which suits him and I’m really looking forward to working with him. He’s a brilliant signing for the football club.”

Baudry came through the Le Havre Academy. He made 157 appearances for Orient after joining from Bournemouth in the summer of 2012.
