JASON Cunningham wants to be the Doncaster bantamweight everybody is talking about, but he’s biding his time for now.

The former ABA champion and amateur stand-out, 22, from Woodlands makes his second appearance as a professional this weekend at Rotherham’s Magna Centre.

With Jamie McDonnell holding three belts and dominating the division both domestically and in Europe Cunningham - with one win from one contest - is a long way off those heights but has vowed to one day match and better his achievements.

He said: “I will be the boxing talk of Doncaster because I’ll work so hard to get there.

“I want it bad and I’m really dedicated to boxing. With the amateur pedigree I’ve got too there’s no reason why I can’t get to the top one day.”

The youngster is managed by John Ingle, who has got him on this Channel Five show, but he trains and often stops over in Hull.

Cunningham admits that it’s sometimes a strain, but he’s spurred on by a desire to make his family proud.

Although up for his next fight, he won’t be going gung-ho against next opponent veteran Delroy Spencer from Walsall.

Despite losing 129 times as a pro, Spencer hasn’t been stopped in his last 40 bouts and he always offers a tough challenge.

Cunningham knows a knockout win would garner him more exposure but he’s going to take the fight as it comes.

“A stoppage would look good but it’s only my second fight and I could do with getting the rounds in too,” he said.

“If the chance comes to stop him then I’ll take it but I won’t be looking for it exactly. Supposing I put in a good performance it might be shown on television which would be great for me.

“I thrive off the pressure and I’ve got a young family to look after. I’ve got a two-year-old daughter Maddison and my girlfriend has a daughter Hailie who is five. I’ve brought her up since I was 17 and I want to do it for them.”
