Knights launch play-offs bid

DONCASTER Knights are now entering the second part of the Championship season where the top eight sides, who play each other home and away, compete for four semi-final places in two groups of four.

At the other end of the table the bottom four compete in a single league with the bottom side being relegated.

The Knights are in Group A of the promotion play off groups along with Bristol, London Welsh and Nottingham and they start their campaign with a home match tonight at Castle Park against Bristol (7.45pm).

This is the club’s first home evening Championship fixture of the season and we are all interested to see how much difference this will make to our support and income.

It will be a hard opener for Knights as they have lost against them twice in the first part of the season. However Brett Davey, our Director of Rugby, and our players are cautiously optimistic that, on their day, they can beat any other team in the league.

There are various ticket offers still available even at this late stage. Details can be found on the Knights website which is www.drfc.co.uk

The other promotion group contains Bedford, Cornish Pirates, Leeds and Rotherham and its amazing that the Knights record against the teams in this group are considerably better than against the teams in Group A!

After this weekend Knights are away at Nottingham (Sunday week) and London Welsh (the following Saturday) and the fixtures are then reversed. The way the fixtures have fallen gives all our supporters the opportunity to watch the Six Nations games on television as it comes to an exciting climax over the next two weeks.

At the beginning of the season, Doncaster Rugby Club took the decision to introduce an amateur team to pick up those players who, on leaving our very successful youth/junior/mini rugby section of 400 youngsters, chose not to continue playing the game with other local junior clubs. We are delighted to report that this has been a huge success and we hope to enter them into the league system next season.
