‘Sky Bet’ National pointer

.

.

With racing here at Doncaster yesterday and an entertaining afternoon’s action with six strong races completed, all eyes are now on our first big feature of the New Year, the Sky Bet Chase in two week’s time, on Saturday, January 28.

The Sky Bet Chase race day gets underway with a two mile three furlong handicap hurdle at 1.10pm. The day’s feature race, the Sky Bet Chase is a listed class 1 handicap run over three miles and gets off at 2.45pm. The seventh and final race is at 4.25pm.

Formerly known as the Great Yorkshire Chase, the Sky Bet Chase is an ideal race for trainers wishing to trial some of their leading candidates for some of the secondary races at the Cheltenham Festival in March or indeed the Aintree Grand National itself in April.

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls won this race in 2009 with Big Fella Thanks and the same horse came in sixth in the 2009 National and followed that up with a fourth place in 2010. Nicholls has a decent record in this race having also won it in 2005 with Colourful Life. Unsurprisingly then, if you see the champion trainer’s name on the slate it’s worth paying attention!

And local trainer and former Grand National winning jockey Richard Guest is another one with a track record, having come up trumps with Thyneandthyneagain back in 2004.

Elsewhere and with the Grand National in mind, Don’t Push It, the horse who finally realised Tony McCoy’s dream of winning the National, has run his last race and is set to enjoy his retirement at owner JP McManus’s stud in Ireland.

Tickets to see the band Madness live after racing as part of the Construction Index live music night on Saturday, June 30, are now on sale.
