DONCASTER RACECOURSE: Encke outlasts Camelot

.

.

WHAT a stunning four days of racing last week at Town Moor.

From the opening day of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival meeting, our Welcome to Yorkshire raceday, to the glamour of Ladies Day, and the racing step-up that comes with the Doncaster Cup Day, we were all geared up for the culmination of the event, the Ladbrokes St Leger Day on Saturday, September 15.

The big talking point of this year’s Ladbrokes St Leger Festival was Camelot. Could this special horse become the first horse since Nijinsky to win the St Leger Stakes and in doing so, achieve the rare feat of the Triple Crown?

The three-year-old colt, trained by Aiden O’Brien, was red hot favourite to win the race and become the first horse since 1970 to join an elite group of only 15 horses with the versatility and all-round pedigree to win the crown, but could not quite do enough to achieve that.

With the national and international spotlight on Town Moor for the 3:40pm classic, Camelot just didn’t have enough for the 1 mile 6½ furlong distance and outsider Encke at 25/1 stole the show to claim victory.

Though the sell-out crowd of spectators who made it to Town Moor may not have watched history be made, they were certainly treated to a great show of racing entertainment.

We have a little while now until the next raceday at Town Moor, a chance to catch our breath after four days of jam-packed action.

Our next meeting takes place on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27.

The Racing Post Trophy Flat Meeting will be two great days of racing, leading into the last flat meeting of the racing calendar on November 10 for the BETFRED November Handicap.

However, sadly, I won’t be on hand to see that raceday through. I have now officially handed over the reins as clerk of the course at Doncaster Racecourse. That responsibility will now fall into the capable hands of Roderick Duncan, as I move on to work at a group level.

Wishing the team at Doncaster Racecourse and readers of Inside Track the very best of luck.
